THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
Kick Fear out of Your Life
Just recently, I was accompanied by Little Sweet Pea and a teenager to visit some friends who were guests at the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa. On our way to go to the fourth floor, Little Sweet Pea asked if we could take the elevator. “Sure,” I said, knowing how fun it is for little children to experience the ride. On the way there, the teenager asked if we could take the stairs instead. He said he didn’t like using the elevator. So, with an understanding heart, we took the stairs.
That reminded me of the times I’ve entered an elevator and how it’s given me a queasy feeling. Many thoughts have come to my mind when I enter an elevator. The ‘what ifs’ start to take over, like: What if we are stuck in here for hours and I need to go to the washroom, or my baby needs to eat or nobody knows we’re in here, etc.
How many times during the day do thoughts of fear bombard our minds? The elevator experience is one example of how we entertain fear-filled thoughts. How many times does that elevator go up and down all day and night long without any issues? I’m sure there are times when there are mechanical failures but in reality, those situations would most likely never happen.
There are thousands of fears that we can entertain in a day. I am thankful that I have learned how to combat fear. Fear is an enemy of our soul that is trying to rid us of peace and soundness. Fear is a controlling force that steals the life right out from underneath us. If you can imagine your life without fear, it would be so amazing!
Once I learned of the promise that “God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind,” I have been a lot freer to be me, to live and experience life. Fear has a way of holding us back, keeping us locked up and stealing our destiny!
Joyce Meyer, a well-known motivational speaker and author, gives us a few suggestions for overcoming fear.
- Learn to confront your fears. Sometimes you may have to stand your ground and declare a promise such as “If God is on my side, whom shall I fear?”
- Be prepared that confrontation may not be comfortable. You may have to suffer through something to defeat your fear of it. You may even lose friends because of it. When you run from your situations, you will not be victorious in the fight. “Fear not, (be firm, confident, undismayed) and see the Lord save you today.”
- Become bold and courageous. When we give in to fear, we run away from something that we should be confronting. Be fed up with the fear that is controlling you and push through to a new level of confidence. Ask God for courage. He will make a way for you to push past that fear and reap the rewards of that.
My life has been changed since I have taken authority over fear. I am much more confident, happier and have peace in my heart. It has also helped me in raising our daughters to live free of fear – and just for example, we have had victory over nightmares, fear of the water in swimming lessons and public speaking. And for the record, on our way down to the main floor of the Spa, we took the elevator.
“Be strong. Take courage. Don’t be intimidated. Don’t give…a second thought because God, your God, is striding ahead of you. He’s right there with you. He won’t let you down; He won’t leave you.”
